Overview

A4-SFX: Created by the community

The A4-SFX enclosure originated as a one-man project, with the goal of creating the smallest case possible that could support high-end standardized components - from Intel Core i7 processors, to powerful full-length GPUs like the GeForce GTX 1080.

The result of years of work and several generations of design, the A4-SFX today stands alone as a product that's dramatically smaller than almost all competing enclosures. As such, it's an ideal solution for SFF enthusiasts; those who need a highly portable system; users who want to reclaim desk space; and gamers who want a high-end PC experience in the living room or in other space-constrained contexts.

What's new with the A4-SFX v3?

The newest revision of the A4-SFX design preserves the layout and configuration of the v2 design, while updating the shielded riser to an all-black version manufactured by Lian Li. A new window kit revision of the A4-SFX is currently in development, but is not available at this time.

How it works

The A4-SFX was the first enclosure to introduce a 'sandwiched' hardware layout. To minimize the footprint and volume of the case, while segregating the individual airflow channels cooling each component, a PCIe extender is used in order to fold the GPU behind the motherboard. This singular feature enables the overall design to be possible, but many additional elements of the enclosure were needed to address and resolve the engineering challenges introduced by this radical design:

  • The A4-SFX's PCIe riser is all-black and of high quality, having been sourced direct from Lian Li.
  • The internal bracket located at the front of the enclosure allows for simple mounting of either SFX or SFX-L power supplies. An internal power cable re-routes the inlet for the power supply to the rear of the case.
  • Depending on the size of the PSU that's installed, up to two 2.5” HDDs or SSDs can be mounted in the drive bay at the front of the enclosure. The drive bay is mounted with rubber spacers, to reduce vibration and noise. Meanwhile, a third 2.5" drive can be mounted behind the front cover.
  • A thin plastic film installed beneath the extended PCIe slot allows for all GPUs - even those without a protective backplate - to be safely be used in the case, without fear of electrical shorting with the aluminum chassis or the PSU.
  • Finally, if additional airflow is desired, a 92mm fan or a 92mm All-In-One water cooling solution can be installed in lieu of storage in the drive bay.

Thermal concept

Through the compartmentalization of the primary components of the computer, the PSU, CPU/motherboard and GPU each enjoy distinct air inlets and outlets for cooling. Because of this, every component is able to efficiently cool itself by drawing fresh air directly from the exterior, and then channeling heated air upward and outside of the case. Even without dedicated exhaust fans, this layout is a key contributor to the impressive cooling efficiency of the A4-SFX, compared to most other enclosures.

Built in partnership with Lian Li

DAN Cases UG (haftungsbeschränkt) has partnered with Lian Li, one of the best in the industry, to manufacture and assemble the A4-SFX. The all-aluminum body and shielded riser are both manufactured by Lian Li in Taiwan, per their highest quality standards. Such a commitment to quality lies at the core of our business philosophy.

Reviews

ComputerBase awards A4-SFX Recommended accolade

The intention and realization, to accommodate the most powerful hardware in a space of just 7.25 liters, sounds impossible - but the DAN Cases A4-SFX is actually impressively successful. Such a minimalist and well-thought-out package that integrates small, trendy components such as mini-ITX motherboards and SFX power supplies with a fast dual-slot graphics card into the tightest of spaces is currently unique and deserves special recognition.

golem.de praises A4-SFX for 'ingenious' design

We are impressed: Dan Cases' A4-SFX is the only known Mini-ITX case with less than ten liters in volume, in which one can install 30cm long graphics cards. The ingenious idea of realizing two seperate cooling chambers with a PCIe riser works excellently in practice.

Linus Tech Tips reviews the A4-SFX

Spoiler Alert: The Dan Cases A4-SFX is a fabulous little enclosure... It is beautiful, efficient, and actually rather fun to build in. I did find myself getting frustrated on a number of occasions while working on it... but frustrated with other cases. For instance, while installing the GPU was really easy, logical, and straightforward, I marveled at how a mid-sized tower could cause problems for me while Dan was able to find an elegant solution to cram into his case.
